Meet people near you
“Near me” sounds simple. Who counts as near, and what they can see about you, is the whole question. Here is how it works, what to look for in any app, and what you can do without one.

How can I meet people near me?
Do two things together: put yourself where the same people repeat (a gym, a class, a regular football viewing, a run club, a co-working space) and use a nearby-discovery app that shows people within a distance you choose. Places create familiarity; an app shows you who is open to meeting.
Repeated places turn strangers into familiar faces, which is how most adult friendships start. An app solves the other half: most people near you are invisible, and it shows the ones who want to meet and live close enough that a second meeting is not a mission across Third Mainland Bridge.
What do people mean by “people near me”?
Usually one of three things, and they need different answers:
- “I want friends in my area.” Look for friendship intent, shared interests and a short trip. See friends.
- “I want to meet someone to date nearby.” Look for clear intentions and verification. See dating.
- “I want someone to do something with tonight.” Look for plans, not profiles. See plans.
Search engines also use your own location to decide what “near” means, which is why results differ for everyone. WhoDey cannot make a page appear near you by repeating the phrase; it can only be clear about where it works (Lagos and nearby towns) and be useful once you are here.
How do dating and social apps find people near me?
They use your phone’s location (GPS or network location), compare it with other members’ locations, and show people inside a distance. What differs between apps is what they reveal: some show exact positions on a map, others only a rounded distance.
Look for these in any app:
- Rounded distance, not exact position. “About 4 km away” is fine. A live map dot is not.
- A choice. You should be able to pick your area by hand and share no location at all.
- Small-group protection. An area with only one or two people should never be listed, because that points at a person.
- A way to hide. Incognito or similar, and control over “last active”.
Why does approximate distance matter?
Exact location is enough for someone to find where you live, work or study. A rounded distance and an area name are enough to decide whether meeting is practical, and not enough to find you. WhoDey is built on that trade: useful closeness, no exact position.
The app’s privacy policy says exactly what is stored.
What app helps me find people nearby?
Several do, with different focus. Tinder, Bumble and Badoo are large international apps built mainly around dating; Badoo has a People Nearby feature. Meetup is built around interest groups and events. WhoDey is a Lagos-focused app that starts from people nearby and covers friendship, dating and plans. Which one fits depends on what you want and how many people near you use it; many people use more than one. Our factual, sourced comparisons are on the compare page.
How WhoDey does it: Discover lists people inside the distance you set, nearest first. Who dey around? shows which areas currently have people. Ask nearby sends a quick “anyone for…?” to nearby people who fit, and replies are private chats, not a public thread. Members must be 18+.
Can I meet new friends around me?
Yes. Friendship works best when it is nearby and repeated: see the same people weekly and make small plans fast. In WhoDey you can look for friends and outings rather than dates, and join Circles built around interests like football, gaming, fitness or film.

Can I find a date nearby?
Yes, and closeness helps: a short trip makes a first coffee easy and a second one likely. Say what you are looking for early and meet in public first. See dating in Lagos.
Can I find someone to go out with nearby?
That is what Ask nearby is for: “anyone for a movie tonight?” reaches nearby people who like that kind of plan, and replies arrive as private chats. See finding someone to go out with in Lagos.
Is it safe to meet people nearby?
It can be, with habits: meet in a public place, tell a friend where you are, arrange your own way home, and never send money to someone you have not met. Closeness makes meeting easy, which is exactly why those habits matter.
The checklist for Lagos, with transport and timing, is in the first-meeting safety guide, and the app’s tools are on the safety page.
What if I am not in Lagos?
WhoDey is built for Lagos first, with nearby towns such as Sango, Mowe, Ibafo and Agbara. Elsewhere in Nigeria the app may show few people yet, and we would rather say that than pretend. The routines in where to meet people in Lagos work in most big cities.
