First meeting safety in Lagos
The general rules are on the safety page. This guide turns them into a checklist for Lagos, where timing, transport and weather change what “safe and easy” looks like.
What should I do before meeting someone for the first time in Lagos?
Choose a public, busy place close to one of you, in daylight or early evening; tell a friend the name, place and time; check traffic and weather; and arrange your own transport both ways. Share your plan and message them when you arrive and when you leave.
Before: pick the place and time
- Public and busy. A café, restaurant or mall with other people and staff around. Avoid private homes, hotels and secluded places for a first meeting.
- Near one of you. Avoid arrangements that mean one person crosses the city. On weekday evenings the bridges between Mainland and Island can add hours.
- Daytime or early evening. Late-night first meetings leave less room to adjust.
- Short. Plan an hour. If it is going well you will extend it.
- Check the weather. In heavy rain, some roads flood and travel slows, so a shorter plan or a rescheduled one is fine.
Transport considerations
- Arrange your own way there and back. Do not rely on the other person for a lift.
- If you use a ride-hailing app such as Bolt or Uber, book it from a busy spot, check the plate and driver details match, and share your trip with a friend.
- Leave early enough to avoid the worst traffic, and when it is dark, leave while there are still many people around.
- Keep your phone charged and a little data or airtime available.
Tell a friend
Send them: the person’s name and profile, the place, the time, and when you will check in. Agree one message that means “call me”. It costs nothing and helps a lot.
During
- Keep your drink with you and your limits clear.
- Do not share your home address, workplace details or financial information.
- Pay for yourself, or split. Never accept pressure to move to a private place.
- If something feels wrong, leave. “I need to go” is enough.
After
Message your friend when you get home. If the meeting went well, plan the second one in public too. If it did not, you can block and report in the app.
Red flags worth leaving over
- Asks for money or a favour you cannot verify.
- Looks or acts very differently from the profile.
- Pushes alcohol or a private location.
- Gets angry when you say no.
