Where to meet new people in Lagos

This page is about the first meeting: where it happens and how to make it likely. For what comes after, see making friends in Lagos.

By routine, by area, by situation

Where can I meet people in Lagos?

Places with a repeating reason to be there work best: gyms and run clubs, church or mosque communities, co-working spaces, classes, volunteering, sports viewing, hobby groups and events you attend more than once. A single big event rarely leads to a friendship; the third visit often does.

Match the place to your routine

If you work from an office

Colleagues from other teams, and people in your building or area, are the easiest start. Suggest something small and regular: lunch on a set day, a weekend match, a shared commute home if you live close. Outside work, look in your own neighbourhood, because the hardest part of Lagos is travel, not shyness.

If you work remotely

You have to build the routine yourself. A co-working space, a regular weekday café, a weekly class or a sports session creates the repetition an office would. See also the 30-day newcomer plan.

If you are a student or a recent graduate

Alumni groups, NYSC mates, study groups and campus-adjacent clubs are strong, because everyone already shares something. Keep in touch with the one or two people you clicked with; most groups fade unless somebody makes the next plan.

Where do singles meet in Lagos?

The same places, plus things where being single is not the point: events, game nights, sports, church or community socials, and friends of friends. Honest answer: the best predictor is whether you say yes to invitations. If you want dating specifically, read dating in Lagos.

How do I start a conversation without it being strange?

  1. Comment on the shared thing (“is this your first time here?”), not on the person.
  2. Ask one open question, then really listen to the answer.
  3. If it goes well, suggest the next step that is smaller than you think: “I am here again next week.”
  4. Swap numbers or follow each other only once they have said something that makes you want to continue.

Using an app as part of it

A nearby-people app solves the problem that most people nearby are invisible. In WhoDey you set a distance, like people you want to meet, and chat after a mutual like. Because it is built on closeness, the second meeting does not need a long trip. How it works is on Meet people near me.

Meet by area, not by city

Pick the two or three areas you can reach easily and make them yours: a regular spot, a usual day. On the Mainland that might be Yaba, Surulere or Ikeja; on the Island side, Lekki, Victoria Island or Ikoyi. You will see the same faces and it will stop feeling like starting over each time.
