New to Lagos: a 30-day plan to meet people
Moving to Lagos can feel like arriving at a party where everybody already knows each other. They mostly do not. This plan assumes you know nobody, have a job or NYSC placement or classes, and want a few real friends in a month.
How do I meet people after moving to Lagos?
Make three commitments: one weekly activity that repeats, one person you invite to something small each week, and one app or group that shows you people near where you live. Keep them within an easy trip of home, because in Lagos distance is the usual reason friendships fade.
Week 1: settle your base
- Learn your own area: the main roads, the shops, the nearest park or open space, and how long it takes to get anywhere at 8am and 6pm.
- Say hello to neighbours and the people you see daily. Familiar faces are the start.
- Choose your one weekly thing: a gym, a run, a class, a faith community, a sports viewing. Put it in your calendar.
Week 2: show up twice
- Go to your weekly thing again. Repetition is what makes people remember you.
- Learn two names, and one detail about each person.
- If you are on NYSC, your platoon and the people at your place of primary assignment are a ready-made circle. Use them; make one plan outside camp or work.
Week 3: start the small invitations
- Invite one person to something small and specific: “I am getting food after this, want to come?”.
- Say yes to the next two invitations you get, even if you are tired.
- Remote worker? Spend two weekday mornings in a café or co-working space near you.
Week 4: widen it and keep it going
- Introduce two people you have met to each other.
- Host something tiny: a film at your place, a walk, a football match.
- Look at who you actually enjoyed. Invest in two or three people rather than ten.
Using an app in the month
An app helps you see who is around before you know anyone. In WhoDey you can choose to see people looking for friends and outings, set a distance that matches your real life, and use Ask nearby for specific plans, like a movie or a match. Introductions made this way should follow the safety basics: public place, a friend who knows, your own way home.
Common mistakes
- Trying to see everyone across the whole city. Pick two or three areas.
- Waiting to feel less awkward first. Everyone feels awkward; do it anyway.
- Making big plans. Small ones happen.
